Speaking the Language
A while ago, I was riding the train and reading a Romanian newspaper. I managed to read it beginning-to-end, it was a well-written broadsheet. The contents however, what constitutes news in this country led me to look up to Flo and say "So... I speak the language."What does that mean? The time has come for clarity to prevail: I know there are many differences between me (my 'own' culture) and that of others, especially Romanians. Yet there are many ways in which I can make a difference here too. There is a hunger that many don't even realize they have, or it's so great they are afraid to look at it, for knowledge, self-knowledge, information, for being more open, tolerant, but also objective. Lots of stuff missing.
Should I elope, should I go for an identity that's still not mine (I'll never be an "Englishman" or anything else), or just drop to a common-denominator Romanian "that'll do" attitude, lacking rigour but able to cope with just about anything?
